Cities, states, and businesses up and down the Pacific Coast are committing to a 50% reduction in food waste by 2030 as part of the West Coast Voluntary Agreement to Reduce Wasted Food. Launched by the Pacific Coast Collaborative (PCC) – which was formed in 2013 to help align regional efforts to create the low-carbon economy of the future – the Voluntary Agreement will serve as a model for other regions around the country to do their part to reduce food waste. ReFED serves as a resource partner for the initiative, along with WRAP and World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

The effort is starting with a focus on food waste reduction at the grocery retail level. Joining PCC jurisdiction members Washington State, Oregon, California, the cities of Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, and Vancouver, BC are the first five retailer signatories – Albertsons Companies West Coast divisions, which include stores such as Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, and Pavilions; The Kroger Co.PCC Community MarketsNew Seasons Market; and Sprouts Farmers Markets. They will all share data through ReFED’s sector-specific Food Loss and Waste Calculator tool and can participate in WRAP and WWF-hosted topical working groups to support on-the-ground implementation of their food waste reduction initiatives.
